What is Botox?

Botox® is an injectable medication that has numerous medical and aesthetic uses. Approximately 6 million Botox treatments are administered each year for cosmetic purposes, making it the industry leader in minimally invasive cosmetic procedures.

The formulation is created using a minute amount of a toxin called Clostridium botulinum. While dangerous in larger concentrations, the amount used in cosmetic applications is perfectly safe. In fact, Botox has a long and documented safety record and has been the subject of numerous clinical trials and research products.

How does Botox work?

Botox reduces the appearance of moderate to severe facial wrinkles, lines, and folds. It works by temporarily impeding the ability of targeted facial muscles to go through their normal range of motion. That means those muscles can no longer pull your skin into wrinkles and folds, giving you a smoother, more relaxed appearance.

Botox can treat the following areas:

  • Crow’s feet, or the wrinkles at the side of your eyes
  • Forehead lines
  • Frown lines between your brows

Treatment consists of several injections in the area of focus. The results last for several months, and the effects gradually fade as you near the end of that timeframe. At that point, you can decide whether to pursue additional treatments to extend the results.

Are Botox injections painful?

Most people are surprised at how fast and painless Botox injections are. The entire process takes less than five minutes, and there is no need for anesthetics or downtime. Many people come in for Botox during their lunch hour, then return to work immediately afterward.

The needles used to inject the Botox solution are incredibly tiny, and the injections don’t penetrate deeply into your muscle tissue. Several injections are needed to treat each area, and the placement depends on the desired outcome.

Working with a skilled and experienced medical professional is critical to achieving the best possible results. There is a significant degree of skill involved in determining the best placement and the proper amount of medication to use to create optimal results.
